Water Softener Drain Installed Wrong? Here’s Why It Matters

The Problem Wasn’t Just the Water Softener

The original water softener had reached the end of its life and needed replacement. While inspecting the installation, we noticed the drain line had been run directly into a drain pipe without the proper safeguards. A proper water softener drain should include components that help reduce the risk of sewer gases entering the home and help protect against contaminated water backing up into the system if the drain or septic line ever becomes blocked.

How We Corrected the Installation

We removed the old drain connection and installed a new drain using a proper standpipe and box air gap. This type of installation provides a safer discharge point and helps prevent contaminated water from flowing back toward the water treatment equipment during a drain backup. The entire drain was rerouted and updated to provide a much safer installation.

A New Water Softener Was Installed

Since the existing water softener had worn out internally, we also installed a new Instasoft water softener. The new system will help:

• Remove hardness minerals
• Reduce calcium buildup
• Protect plumbing fixtures and appliances
• Provide soft water throughout the home
• Regenerate automatically overnight when water isn’t being used
